Motivation can be quite difficult to find during times like this, it is totally understandable if you are feeling flat, directionless, lethargic or whatever else your are feeling. We have all been knocked off kilter! However, I think it is very important to not allow this to become our new norm, especially as it can lead to varying Mental Health and Wellness issues.
We need to start thinking about what we want in life and asking ourselves questions like the ones I have listed below to help give us a semblance of direction. Make sure they are attainable, especially during these times. For instance do not expect to be cruising along the Mediterranean next week because that ain't happening! We do not want to set ourselves up for failure and disappointment from the get go. We want to evaluate the things we can change now and put them into place to make us happier. All of these questions make a big difference and impacts our motivational levels.
What are your goals?
What are some small steps you can do to reach those goals?
What makes you happy?
What are your strengths?
What do you do for self-care?
What energises you?
Personally I did this at the start of the pandemic and I have been able to keep myself quite focused and motivated. Obviously there will be times that you feel flat and just need to rest and that is totally okay because we need to listen to our bodies. Other times it’s due to dehydration, energy deficit, food deprivation and vitamin D. We just need to identify it and perhaps make a check list.
As well as the above, other useful things to do include walking, meditation, vision boards or journaling. Not all of these will work for everyone however hopefully one or some will. These suggestions are known to inspire clarity which can allow you to focus and hone in on what is going on with you.
I have utilised these questions with students and it definitely helps orient ones self. I think what is very important to remember is that during this whole process we need to celebrate the journey. Each time you reach another step closer to the big goal, reward yourself. Positivity is massive and can be your best motivator to conquer whatever you want to attain.
